Originally released in 1991, Uncle Anesthesia marked Screaming Trees’ major-label breakthrough and a pivotal moment inthe evolution of the Seattle underground. Issued on Epic after three albums for SST, the record sharpened the band’s raw psychedelic garage-rock sound while retaining the haze and weight that set them apart from their grunge contemporaries. The album is produced by Chris Cornell alongside Terry Date, a pairing that gives the record both grit and clarity. Cornell also contributes backing vocals across several tracks, adding another distinctive texture to songs such as “Uncle Anesthesia” and “Before We Arise”. At the centre is Mark Lanegan, whose deep, weathered voice anchors the album’s blend of psychedelia, garage rock, and early alternative metal edges.
