Pale Communion finds Opeth deepening the melodic, progressive direction they explored in the preceding decade – rich in detail, expansive in arrangement, and performed with the precision that has become Mikael kerfeldt’s trademark. Produced by kerfeldt and mixed by Steven Wilson, the album draws on a broad palette of influences, from early King Crimson to the organ-driven weight of classic Deep Purple, while retaining the band’s unmistakable atmosphere and emotional depth. kerfeldt described the record as an effort to push melody to the forefront, resulting in some of the band’s most expressive vocal lines and intricate harmonic writing. Metal Injection called it “the missing link between Damnation and Ghost Reveries,” and AllMusic noted its kinship with seminal early-’70s progressive rock. Limited to 3000 individually numbered copies, it includes a 4-page booklet, a 20 20 cm exclusive print, and comes housed in a deluxe gatefold sleeve with a linen-laminate textured finish and gold hype sticker.
