DEXTER GORDON Dexter Calling (Blue Note Tone Poet Series limited edition 7-track LP pressed on 180-gram Black Vinyl. Mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio from the original master tape, plated and pressed at RTI. DexterCalling was recorded in May 1961, just three days after Doin’ Allright, during the opening stretch of Dexter Gordon’s Blue Note renaissance. After a difficult 1950s, Gordon’s arrival at the label brought him back into sharp focus, with his huge tenor tone, relaxed authority and quick melodic wit fully restored on record. This session places Gordon at the head of a first-rate quartet with Kenny Drew on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums. The album opens with the soulful hard bop of “Soul Sister”, moves through the driving “Modal Mood”, “I Want More” and “Clear The Dex”, then slows for “Ernie’s Tune” before closing with “Charlie Chaplin’s Smile”.
