Originally released in 2012, Noctourniquet stands as one of the most intriguing and divisive chapters in The Mars Volta’s catalogue. Emerging from a period of fragmentation, side projects, and shifting creative priorities, the album captures Omar Rodrguez-Lpez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala deliberately stepping away from the band’s maximalist past and into something leaner, darker, and more electronically charged. Built from material Omar had originally recorded with Deantoni Parks, the songs were shaped into Mars Volta compositions after Cedric identified their potential and began writing lyrics. The result is an album that retains the band’s restless energy while embracing synthesisers, negative space, and a more direct, song-focused approach. Tracks like “The Whip Hand” and “Dyslexicon” fuse paranoid cyber-rock tension with warped pop instincts, while pieces such as “Aegis” and “Vedamalady” rework familiar rhythmic and melodic ideas into something colder and more menacing. Lyrically, Noctourniquet sketches a fragmented dystopian narrative, described by Cedric as involving “some sort of device that stops the darkness from bleeding,” drawing inspiration from mythology, nursery rhymes, and underground post-punk. It’s an unsettling, subtly turbulent listen, but also one of the band’s most focused statements – an album about subtraction, reinvention, and refusing to repeat past glories.
