PRIMUS Brown Album (US limited edition 15-track double album 2-LP remastered in 2018 and pressed on 180-gram black vinyl. Originally released in 1997, Brown Album occupies a distinctive place in Primus’ catalogue. Recorded with a deliberately raw, stripped-back approach, the album leaned away from polish in favour of immediacy, groove, and an almost live-in-the-room feel. It’s a record where the band doubled down on feel and texture, embracing looseness and instinct over studio refinement. Musically, Brown Album is anchored by Les Claypool’s elastic bass lines and idiosyncratic vocal delivery, locked tightly with Herb’s muscular, often unorthodox drumming. Tracks like “Shake Hands With Beef” and “Fisticuffs” balance funk, noise, and humour with a sense of momentum, while deeper cuts such as “Bob’s Party Time Lounge” and “Camelback Cinema” explore stranger, more atmospheric corners of the band’s sound.
