MOTOWN LABEL The Complete Motown Singles Vol. 11B: 1971 (2009 UK issue limited edition 120-track 5-CD album set – ‘Vol. 11B: 1971′ picks up where Vol. 11A left off, covering July through December 1971, detailing the company’s and the new sounds’ transition from assembly-line hit singles to album projects of Los Angeles, California. Motown continued to experiment with rock on the Rare Earth label [Stoney and Meatloaf, the Rustix, Sunday Funnies]; with MOR [Tony & Carolyn]; with singer-songwriters [Bobby Darin, Valerie Simpson]; and with different slices of soul, from new signings Virgil Henry, Thelma Houston and Popcorn Wylie, a returning veteran. There were significant bumps in the road too: Motown was seeing the decline of some of its marquee acts, from the Four Tops to the Supremes, who still had significant hits: ‘MacArthur Park’ and ‘Floy Joy’, respectively. The whole story is laid out in rich detail across five discs that feature not only the hits and their B-sides, but also rare mixes, pulled releases and more. Presented in card picture sleeves, all of which are housed in deluxe packaging resembling a 7″ sleeve, complete with a rich 148-page booklet featuring unique stories about every song. The sleeve/case shows slight foxing, whilst the discs all remain in Near Mint condition)
