MCCOY TYNER Asante (Blue Note Tone Poet Series limited edition 4-track LP pressed on 180-gram Black Vinyl. Mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio from the original master tape, plated and pressed at RTI. Asante capturesMcCoy Tyner at a pivotal point in his post-Coltrane Blue Note period, drawing his growing interest in African musical sources into the centre of the recording. Recorded in 1970 but not released until 1974, the album is built around the denserhythmic interplay of drummer Billy Hart and percussionist Mtume, with Tyner’s piano joined by Buster Williams on bass, Ted Dunbar on guitar and Andrew White on alto saxophone. The four-song set moves from the extended opener “Malika” and title track “Asante”, both featuring the ethereal vocals of Songai, through to “Goin’ Home” and the driving modal force of “Fulfillment”. Presented in a tip-on jacket picture sleeve with hype sticker & factory sealed. Recommended)
